Annual Conference for Christians

13th-15th November 2009  Whirlow Grange, Shefflield

 ‘FAITH IN PRACTICE’

Speaker Revd Tim Bryan

Co-ordinating Chaplain, HMP Wandsworth

What will we do?

Over five sessions Tim Bryan will be helping us to explore issues relating to faith and probation practice. This will include maintaining Christian distinctiveness in a secular work place; how we manage personal faith in our work with offenders and colleagues, and if we should ever share it; if faith can be a catalyst for change in offenders and how we work with it; facing the challenge of balancing public protection with restorative justice.

We hope that the weekend will leave us all feeling refreshed, renewed and motivated to seek the opportunities presented within probation and the wider criminal justice arena.

The CIP Annual General Meeting will take place at 3pm on the Saturday, to which all are welcome. Alternatively it could be a time for socialising or exploring the magnificent local countryside.

 Who is Tim Bryan?

Tim was the first national MAPPA co-ordinator and central to the construction and development of these public protection arrangements across England and Wales since their inception in 2001. His professional background includes 27 years experience with the Metropolitan Police where he specialised in the investigation of child abuse, ‘hate crime’ including domestic violence, and the management of sexual and violent offenders in the community. As an Anglican priest for the last 10 years, he has also acted as a child protection adviser to the Bishop of Southwark and was a member of Lord Nolan’s review into abuse within the Catholic Church in 2001. Since September 2006, Tim has been employed as a chaplain at Wandsworth Prison initially involved with resettlement and more recently as the co-ordinating chaplain and team leader for this large and complex prison. Both roles have involved helping faith communities engage positively with offenders on release, recognising the tension required between offering positive welcome and engagement and applying necessary constraints and safeguards.

Where are we going?

Whirlow Grange is situated on the South West side of Sheffield on the edge of the glorious Peak District,

with beautiful grounds that have won a Sheffield in Bloom silver gilt award. It has excellent public transport, road and rail links. The centre has been recently refurbished and all bedrooms are ensuite. There are single, double, twin or family rooms.  Internet points in all conference rooms and most bedrooms. There is a fully accessible disabled bedroom, including access lift to all floors.  The house boasts fresh cooked food and a fully licensed bar. Refreshments are available 24 hours a day. There is a chapel, and ample parking.

What will it cost?

Charges this year are £150 per adult. A deposit of £50 is required, and we suggest paying the rest in two £50 instalments in August and October. The cost reflects the charges of Whirlow Grange, however we do not want the cost to be an obstacle to anyone attending, so if required concessions can be arranged through discussion with Jim Whitham.

Can I come for the day?

Of course! The costs for this are set out on the booking form.
